Most Expensive New Listing: Historic $135M Beverly House Back on the Market

The iconic Beverly house is back on the market. Offered at a price—$135 million—befitting its lofty status, it’s this week’s most expensive new listing on®.

Built in 1927, it’s one of California’s most prominent Mediterranean-style mansions. Over the decades, a number of big names have passed through the stately gates and traversed the 800-foot-long driveway. The mansion was built for local banker Milton Getzby by Gordon Kaufmann, and later owned by William Randolph Hearst and his lady love, Marion Davies.

Since the days of Hearst, the 50,000-square-foot estate has been rented out for philanthropic and corporate events, film premieres, and celebrations for some of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities.

It’s also a favored filming location. You may recognize it in “The Godfather” or Kevin Costner‘s “The Bodyguard.”

So although the initial outlay on this 19-bedroom, 29-bath estate is enormous, income opportunities are available to offset what’s bound to be a massive monthly mortgage payment.

Stately grounds

Sprawling over 3.5 acres, the grounds include colorfully tiled fountains, waterfalls, a lighted tennis court with its own bar and media room, and a swimming pool and pool house.

Guests make a grand entrance when they pass through the massive wood doors into the 50-foot entry hall and loggia, which leads to a living room with a 22-foot-high arched and detailed ceiling.

They can then stroll into an impressive, two-story library with handcarved woodwork and wraparound gallery.

Or perhaps wander into the billiard room, with its massive carved-stone fireplace and intricately paneled ceiling, both sourced from Hearst Castle in San Simeon.

There’s additional room for entertaining on the outdoor terrace, which can accommodate 400 guests for a sit-down meal. And there’s a commercial kitchen on the premises to prepare food for these guests.

An art deco–style nightclub, wine cellar, two projection rooms, and spa facilities with a gym and massage room complete the entertainment amenities.

When it’s time to retire to private quarters, there are double master suites as well as four guest suites. And yes, there are separate staff quarters, a guesthouse, and a gatehouse with a kitchen and four bedrooms.

The historic mansion has been owned for over four decades by attorney and businessman Leonard M. Ross. He’s the estate’s fourth owner and has restored and expanded the property, adding close to 20,000 square feet of interior space. The mansion has bounced on and off the market over the years, ranging in price from $115 million to $195 million in 2016.

The property is being co-listed by Jade Mills of Coldwell Banker, Aaron Kirman of Pacific Union, Drew Fenton of Hilton & Hyland, and Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency.
