Lakefront properties just might be America’s best kept real estate secret. When looking for a house on the water, many buyers instinctively gaze out at the ocean. But coastal property is limited to where the waves are, leading to fewer offerings and potentially sky-high prices. (Malibu, anyone?)
But looking for a lakeside home opens up a huge interior swath of the country where bodies of water abound. In fact, we recently took a deep dive into the nation’s top lake towns with affordable properties.
We decided to wade into the waterfront and find luxurious lake houses currently on the market. Here are nine of our favorites—c’mon in, the water’s fine! (OK, it’s actually a bit chilly, but still.)
Price: $14 million Delightful details: Why settle for one home when you can have three? Behold the Lake Houses of Eagle Cove, a gated compound that offers a trio of luxury family homes, as well as a guesthouse and a boathouse. All homes are right on the edge of Lake Washington, and offer water views from nearly every room in each house.

Price: $4,198,000 Delightful details: Located on Oswego Lake, this fully renovated charmer from the ’30s has 180 feet of water frontage. The functional floor plan features modern amenities blended with the “charm of yesteryear.”

Although this home is pricey, Coeur d’Alene did make it onto our list of top 10 affordable lake towns.
